Solar fountains really can transform the look & feel of your garden. There's not too many other aspects of your garden that can do that. If you'd like more information on solar fountains then check out this useful article at http://www.greenyourhome101.com/use-solar-fountains-to-decorate-your-garden/

Solar pump technology is indeed improving every year. Solar water feature pumps are now powerful enough to run the majority of mainstream fountains and garden water features. We are about to lauch a 1500LPH solar pump which would be more than powerful enough to pump over 3m in height. This makes solar a suitable option for most people now. In the UK (I'm not sure where you are based) Ann, a terracotta cascade including solar LED light is under £40 (the first picture on the page)

We get a lot of requests for solar fountains, and whilst the technology is improving, they are still only powerful enough to run smaller water features where the water doesn't have to be pumped to a great height. This is fine if you are after just a smaller feature, and as you've mentioned in the article if you can cope with the fluctuations. I would have thought that the panels will improve a lot over the next year or two allowing them to power more powerful pumps and making them more mainstream.
